A hearty comfort dish with tender ground beef layered with thinly sliced potatoes, sour cream, cheddar cheese, and savory spices. Easy to assemble and satisfying for large groups or weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 lb (450 g) ground beef
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon dried oregano
Salt and pepper, to taste
4 large potatoes, thinly sliced (about 1/8-inch thick)
2 cups sour cream (divided)
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
1 cup beef broth
Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C)
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat
Sauté chopped onion and garlic until softened, 3-4 minutes
Add ground beef and cook until browned, 5-7 minutes
Stir in paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper until beef is well-seasoned
In a 9×13-inch baking dish, layer thinly sliced potatoes in a single sheet
Spread half the beef mixture over the potatoes
Pour ¾ cup sour cream over the beef layer
Evenly distribute ¾ cup cheddar cheese
Top with remaining beef mixture
Pour ¾ cup sour cream and remaining ¼ cup cheese on top
Slowly pour beef broth around the edges of the dish
Bake for 65 minutes, uncovering halfway to allow cheese to golden
Garnish with parsley before serving

Notes

For a lighter version, reduce sour cream by ¼ cup and add ½ cup milk or non-dairy alternative
Try Gruyère or Monterey Jack cheese instead of cheddar for different flavors
Add diced tomatoes or green chilies for extra tanginess or heat
Bake in a cast-iron skillet for a crustier bottom
