4 large Granny Smith apples, cored and sliced
½ cup butter
¼ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon or apple pie spice
½ teaspoon salt
1-2 teaspoons lemon juice (optional)
Melt butter in a cast iron skillet or heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat
Stir in granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt until combined
Add apple slices and coat thoroughly with the syrup
Cook until tender and bubbly, about 20-30 minutes
Finish with optional lemon juice if desired
Apples like Honeycrisp or Fuji can be substituted
Peeling is optional for a rustic texture
Serve warm with a spoonful of syrup
